The problem IMO seems to be that the mute setting is not retained between start ups. The best solution I’ve found is to turn off (not just mute) by holding down the volume control for a few seconds until the screen goes black. This will be retained upon next start up. Unfortunately, all infotainment is unavailable until turning it back on.
I have this same exact problem with my iPhone 5c on iOS 8+ (currently 8.1.3). I had a Mazda 3, 2010 that shuffled music no problem, this car also did not have any technical display for the track list, etc. I recently got a Mazda CX-5 2015 and the 5c music through Bluetooth cannot keep the shuffle active, whether in playlists or not.
But a crappy USB input or flaky Bluetooth will net you $200 in a lawsuit, while the lawyers would get millions. The Bluetooth works great for me, at least in Music streaming and using basic phone stuff. I have Cortana to read my texts for me. I have a Microsoft LUMIA 1020 with Windows Phone 8.1 update 1 with BT 4.0LE.
