Upon closer look, the film is arguably a socioeconomic and racial discourse. It focuses on the ascension of Marshall Mathers into the rap industry, previously dominated by African-American males. The movie '8 Mile' is based on some of Eminem's personal experiences while living in Detroit. There are many similarities between the movie and Eminem's life, such as the title referring to a road that divides Detroit's wealthy white community from the predominantly black and impoverished population, as well as a white man trying to make a name Eminem wrote the hit song whilst filming 8 Mile, the 2002 movie which parallels his life. Lose Yourself details the life of Eminem’s character in the movie, Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith Jr., and consequently, Eminem wrote the song in 8 Mile a 2002 movie. The movie 8 Mile tells the story of Jimmy ‘B-Rabbit’ Smith (played by Eminem), an aspiring rapper with a messed-up life.
